Les Ruses d’Amour (the disguises of love)
Step into the enchanting world of Les Ruses d’Amour, a delightful comic ballet that promises to captivate audiences with its lively storytelling and whimsical charm. Set against the backdrop of a majestic Italian villa, this production brings to life the humorous tale of Isabelle and Damis, two betrothed strangers who disguise themselves to escape their impending marriage.
Join us at Portland Metro Arts on May 10, 2025, for an unforgettable experience at either 3 PM or 7 PM. This vibrant performance features not only dancers but also actors, jugglers, and magicians, all weaving a tapestry of comedy and romance through the timeless music of Russian composer Alexander Glazunov.
The story unfolds in a time when marriages were arranged by families, and the betrothed often met for the first time at the altar. In a twist of fate, Isabelle and Damis independently choose to don disguises in a bid to dodge their unwanted nuptials. Their antics lead to a series of comical misunderstandings, culminating in a surprising revelation when the sobbing, veiled bride discovers her true love in the groom she was meant to avoid.
The History of Les Ruses d’Amour
Originating from the creative genius of Glazunov and choreographed initially by Marius Petipa for the Hermitage Theatre in 1900, Les Ruses d’Amour was historically overshadowed by the turbulence of its era. Much of the original choreography has been lost yet, thanks to the artistic prowess of Metro Dancers, this enchanting ballet has been lovingly revived for contemporary audiences, preserving its original charm and humor.
Don’t miss this chance to witness a joyous double wedding finale, where love triumphs in the most unexpected ways. “Les Ruses d’Amour” is a celebration of love’s unpredictability and the comedic beauty of human folly—an event not to be missed!
Secure your seats and prepare to be swept away by the magic of the ballet!
